Currently Under Investigation

If you have checked that superfast broadband is available at your property and you have received the message, “Your area is currently under investigation”, read on for more information.

Area mapping

Orange Areas

Your area is showing as orange on our map. Parts of these areas will be covered in Wave 7 of Contract 2, which started in July 2017. Each Wave may take up to 12 months to complete. You can find a list of the Wave 6 cabinets on our Rolling 12-Month Plan.

There may be two shades of this colour on the map, the darker shade shows which areas we estimate will achieve superfast speeds and the lighter shade indicates areas where properties may be connected to the fibre but the achievable speeds may fall below superfast (based on the distance from the cabinet).

To check the specific cabinet that you are connected to please visit the BT DSL checker. For the best results you will need to be able to enter a BT landline number for your property. If you do not have this then you can use your address, but it may be less accurate. Do not use the postcode checker as that covers too wide an area to be of any use.

Please note that as we get to more challenging areas there may not be copper cabinets available to upgrade. In these cases we may stand two cabinets (one copper and one fibre); stand one cabinet (all-in-one copper and fibre); or install no cabinets if different technologies are to be used (for instance Fibre to the Premise, also known as FTTP).

We may not be able to map all of these areas until they actually go live as, depending on the technology to be used, the coverage information is not always available until we reach that stage.

To be informed when there are upgrades in your area that are likely to affect you, you can register here.

Amber Areas

Amber areas are currently under investigation for Contract 2: As with the announcement of Contract 1, this is all subject to survey and there is a lot of work still to do before we can give details of when the rollout will actually occur in every area. The rollout commenced in early 2016 and will continue until summer 2019. However, we are working to accelerate this and over the next few months will be working closely with BT to ensure that we gain maximum efficiencies from the programming. This approach has borne fruit with Contract 1.

The work is being announced in Waves, with new Waves coming on-stream every 3 months. Each Wave may take up to 12 months to build, so that several Waves will be running at any time.

Property-level mapping

This information is derived from the following sources:

  • Open Market Review and Public Consultation that was held and the end of 2016. During this process all commercial providers were invited to submit information about their rollout plans to the end of 2019. **
  • Contract 2 coverage for the CSW Broadband project.
  • State Aid approved Contract 3 potential intervention area.

Some properties have stars on them of different colours. Those without a star are anticipated to have superfast broadband by 2019 **

Red Star:

You are in an area that is awaiting further funding. We are doing all that we can to bring in additional funding to take the network further.

Red and Yellow Star:

There is currently no planned superfast coverage here, but the area is in scope for consideration under Contract 3. We will not know until the procurement process is completed which areas will be included in the Contract 3 rollout, and hope to be able to map the additional coverage during the autumn of this year.

Green and Yellow Star:

This means that an alternative supplier (not BT) has said that they will be providing superfast broadband by the end of 2019**. We are not able to intervene in areas where a provider has said that they will be rolling out superfast broadband.

** Because this information is provided in commercial confidence we are not able to state which provider has said that they will go to particular areas.

Please note:

The map can be used to check all of our areas but this facility will only return results for the Openreach infrastructure. Virgin Media and other broadband providers may also be offering services in your area.

Our unique property checker shows the currently planned status (down to property level) for known providers up to the end of 2019. You simply need to enter your postcode and you will then see a list of premises and their status. The information was derived from the Open Market Review and Public Consultation that we carried out in preparation for the Contract 3 procurement. If the coverage has been promised by a commercial provider, then we are bound by commercial confidentiality and cannot give further details. However, if the upgrades are planned through the CSW Broadband project then you can see the upgrades which have been announced to date on the Rolling 12-Month Plan.
