Broadband Project Gets the Green Light

Warwickshire County Council has now been given the go-ahead to start its procurement of a superfast wholesale broadband network to cover Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire.

For the past few months the CSW Broadband project has been engaging with individuals, businesses and communities to understand what broadband speeds are actually being achieved and what is preventing better broadband speeds across the sub-region. This work will continue and will become even more important now that work has started to find a supplier to the project. As a first stage the project team will carry out an Open Market Review, which means engaging with existing broadband providers to learn what their business development plans may be.

Councillor Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Communities, said: “This is a major milestone. We have been waiting for the green light to proceed and now the project becomes very real. We need to hear from all broadband or Internet service providers in the area to gain an understanding of what their future development plans are. All information will obviously be given in strict commercial confidence. The information will enable us to refine our data before going out to public consultation in a few weeks’ time.”
