The government is on a mission to deliver lightning-fast, reliable broadband to everyone in the UK.
Their aim is to provide world-class ‘gigabit-capable’ connectivity with speeds of up to 1000Mbps (megabits per second) to at least 85% of UK premises by December 2025 and at least 99% by 2030.
The Government’s flagship £5 billion programme, Project Gigabit, will be crucial to achieving their target of full gigabit coverage by 2030.
It will specifically target the homes and businesses that are not included in commercial broadband suppliers’ deployment plans, reaching the parts of the UK that might otherwise miss out on getting access to the digital connectivity they need.
As demand for faster internet speeds continues to grow, Project Gigabit will ensure the UK network is fit for the future – upgrading the nation with the lightning-fast, ultra-reliable broadband infrastructure that will meet people’s needs not just today but for decades to come.
Building Digital UK (BDUK), an executive agency sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), is responsible for the roll out of Project Gigabit.
Project Gigabit in Warwickshire
BDUK has divided England up into areas known as ‘Lots’ to deliver the Project Gigabit build programme. Warwickshire is in Lot 11 with Leicestershire.
The Public Review for Project Gigabit in Leicestershire and Warwickshire ran from 17 June 2022 to 18 July 2022, and the indicative intervention area for the project was defined by BDUK.
Following a transparent, fair and robust procurement process, BDUK awarded a £71.5 million contract to deliver Project Gigabit in Leicestershire and Warwickshire in January 2024 to broadband network provider CityFibre.
CityFibre have been contracted to upgrade at least 14,500 premises across the county with thousands more also set to benefit by being included through the potential for additional scope.
The Lot 11 build, which started in October 2024, will be delivered across four phases over the next 4 – 5 years. In Warwickshire, their intention is to split the build out as follows:
Phase 1 – North Warwickshire and parts of Nuneaton & Bedworth, Rugby & Warwick districts
Phase 2 – Parts of Rugby, Stratford and Warwick Districts
Phase 3 – No Warwickshire build
Phase 4 – Parts of Stratford and Warwick Districts
We will provide you with more detailed updates on build progress within Warwickshire as and when we get them. You can also use CityFibre’s postcode checker to find out more about upgrades in your area.
